All right ... all right! I'll admit it. I read Book 1, and HAD to buy the sequel. The intrigue of Alaskan lore continues, and the supernatural elements of Book 1 are integral to this one, as well. However, Book II didn't gel quite as much as the first installment, maybe because it seemed crowded with this, that or the other detail/character/legend, or because less emphasis was put on the characters and more on the storyline. I didn't care about the characters as much in Book II. That said, it was an enjoyable read, and I would definitely read more from Mike Delany.

Great continuation to Book 1. Character development and story line is very interesting. I enjoyed this book as much as the first one. Looking forward to reading Book 3 in the series.
I thought the first book was better, but not by much. Mike Delany does a good job with his characters and plot to keep the story moving along. The characters are very likeable and the author is very descriptive so you can almost see the mountains and rivers of Alaska.
The wing-nut who had forced Gus O'Neill' s friend Hayward Jennings into a false disappearance in the Alaskan wilderness was Dr. Quinten LaGrange, a genius paranoid schizophrenic. The uncharted territory between sanity and madness had slipped askew. The mad-hatter now had taken Haywood as a hostage. Gus and Hard Case believe that Haywood crashed his plane on purpose.

Gus had experienced strange encounters at the Varmitage. The giant grizzly with three claws on one mangled fireplace had tracked Gus for days. Gus had fought and killed Trilogy which subsequently disappeared. Now, Haywood was in grave danger. Gus had earned his bones. The old hermits place might offer more surprises.

The deranged scientist who had already murdered was also being sought by the FBI and CIA. They wanted him unharmed. He had developed an engine that didn't require fuel. The scientist believed that he had tapped into the electrical energy released during geomagnetic storms. This had overtures of HAARP the High Frequency Active Aurorae Research Program. Nations would kill to open that Pandora's box. Shades of Nikola Tesla, this controversial ionospheric research program really did exist!

Gus and Hard Case must locate Hayward, hopefully alive. The Moosejaw Books. I and II have been engrossing reading. I have enjoyed both novels written by Mike Delany, and I will watch for more.
It was a good book but not as good as book I. Book II was not given 5 stars because the language and sex used in several sections of the book. Also I felt it was too long. I thought book I was excellent and very well written, the sex part was handled very nicely by the author leaving it up to the readers imagination.
I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the first in the series. I truly enjoyed the metaphysical mystery of the first book, but in this one we have Athabascan spirits, ghosts from the past, Welsh gods, and the mythical Snow Viper all mixed up in a paranormal stew. It was just too much for me. The second story did tie up some loose ends from the first, but everything fell into place so neatly, it left me with a curled lip (e.g. Uncle Jack's connection with the CIA). I still like the characters, although the dialogue somehow seemed less authentic to me this time around. However, I don't understand the many reviewers who complain about the smoking and drinking. I find these habits rather endearing in Gus, Haywood, and Case. Aside from the confusing muddle of mythology, religion, and scifi, my other big complaints are the villians and the women. The bad guys in this book were Cambridge researchers who were very cookie-cutter and said things like "shall." I couldn't even tell the difference between the personality of LaGrange and Lindsay although the author puts some effort into making LaGrange seem schizophrenic. The women were also flat and one-dimensional. Inga is a sex-addicted comedy relief and Morgan is a mysterious spirit-woman who doesn't mind playing 50's housewife for Gus whenever he fancies a stint at the Varmitage. Inga is actually pretty entertaining, and I'm sure she holds the interest of male readers; but both women are two sides of the "fantasy woman" coin. Hopefully in the next book Mr. Delaney will include a real female character--I have hopes for Donna. And hopefully Old Blue Eye will begin to help us understand why the Moose Jaw is a sponge for the paranormal.
Although the love scenes weren't as good, the plot was excellent. Probably not a women's book, Much more of a guys book. If you have ever been a Marine/Navy Corpsman/Cop of lover of hunting or whiskey, just buy it. Needs a little more goose fat lotion in my opinion.
Very good story with a lot of action. I was disappointed with the description of handling the Ruger firearms. Both fireArms can be loaded with 6 rounds 100% safely. There is no need to say they only carried 5 rounds safely as that is incorrect. Wonderful book from buy soon, you will not be disappointed.
